Working hours

  • The rates as set for the statutory minimum wage are based on a full working week. This usually is 36, 38 or 40 hours a week and it depends in the sector. For example, a 38-hour full-time working week applies in the hospitality and retail trade.

Definitions

Employers are obliged to pay a holiday allowance of 8%. Typically, this supplement is paid in May or June for the entire year, but if the contract is shorter, the supplement will be reflected in the weekly or monthly wages. The allowance must be stated on the salary slip.

The adult minimum wage has been set at 21 years. The minimum youth wage applies to employees between 15 and 20 years old. For employees between the ages of 18 and 20, with an employment contract based on the vocational learning pathway (BBL), alternative levels apply.
