Detailed Project Information

The Gig Economy Initiative, led by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), promotes fair working conditions in the digital labour market. In collaboration with the WageIndicator Foundation, the initiative is scaling and adapting its innovative Living Tariff Calculator to the South African context.

Digital platforms provide opportunities for income and flexibility, yet gig workers often face unstable pay, limited protections, and hidden costs such as fuel, equipment, and unbilled working hours. To address these challenges, the Living Tariff Calculator helps workers calculate fair task-based or time-based earnings that reflect the real costs of gig work. By empowering workers, representatives, and policymakers with data-driven insights, the tool fosters a more equitable gig economy.

Objective The project aims to empower gig workers and stakeholders in South Africa with a practical tool to ensure fairer pay and improved working conditions. By localizing and piloting the Living Tariff Calculator, the project contributes to building sustainable and inclusive frameworks for digital labour.
Role of Wageindicator WageIndicator Foundation is responsible for adapting and hosting the Living Tariff Calculator for South Africa, ensuring it is freely accessible as an open resource. The foundation will manage online validation with stakeholders, provide technical support, promote the tool nationally and globally, and organize a stakeholder webinar to introduce the calculator. In addition, WageIndicator will contribute to a lessons-learned exchange, gathering feedback and shaping next steps for future replication.
