Calculation of Minimum Wage Rates
- Minimum wage is based on the legal number of working hours, which is 2400 hours of work per year for agricultural workers, and on 40 hours of work per week for other workers. (art. 142-143 of the Labour Code).
In April 2014, the Guaranteed Minimum Wage (SMIG) increased to 40,000 CFA francs per month from 31,625 CFA francs. There was an increase of 26,48%. The Guaranteed Minimum Wage has not been revised since 2009.
According to the General Labour Collective Agreement no salary can be less than the Guaranteed Minimum Wage (SMIG). SMIG is fixed by Decree of the Council of Ministers on the report of the Minister of Labour after a reasoned opinion of the National Labour Council (Article. 60).
According to Article 210 of the Labour Code, the guaranteed minimum wage may be revised every 3 years or when needed.
Minimum Wages in Benin are expected to be updated every 3 years. There may be revision in wages in the year 2017, though the announcement month is not known.
