Spain - Strike to demand pay rise for public services - April 30, 2025

More than a thousand public service workers demonstrated to demand a fair and substantial pay increase. The rally, convened by the CCOO Public Services union – representing workers in health, education, and municipalities – took place outside the Ministry of Finance, where union representatives delivered a formal manifesto of demands. The union called for immediate payment of the 0.5% salary increase pending from 2024, which the Government has linked to approval of the state budget – a move the union rejects. CCOO also urged full implementation of the Framework Agreement for a 21st-Century Administration, which remains only partially fulfilled. Key priorities include the introduction of a 35-hour work week, full application of professional qualification frameworks, implementation of equality plans, job creation, reduction in temporary contracts, and guaranteed access to public services in rural areas. The union is also calling for negotiations on a new multi-year agreement that ensures job security, decent wages, and improved career development for public workers.
