Spain - New collective agreement for waste workers - April 30, 2025

The longest garbage collection strike in Madrid in ten years came to an end, following a collective agreement between unions and the private companies subcontracted by the Madrid City Council. Around 1,800 workers employed by six companies took part in the action. The unions demanded fairer conditions across the workforce, improved pay, and greater job stability. The agreement includes progressive pay rises, from 1.5% in 2025 to 5% in 2029, alongside improved conditions for part-time staff and long-service bonuses. Throughout the strike, the City Council fined concessionaires for failing to meet minimum service obligations, with penalties reaching € 2 million by the end of the week. Waste collection resumed immediately following the vote.
