Serbia - Protest against low pay and neglect in cultural sector - October 31, 2025

Two representative unions – the Autonomous Union of Culture of Serbia and the Culture, Art and Media Union “Nezavisnost” – held a protest in Belgrade on 17 October calling for higher wages and improved working conditions for cultural workers. Union representatives explained that the average monthly wage in the sector is around 76,000 dinars (about €650) and that more than 4,000 workers – around 40% of the total – will soon fall below the minimum wage level. Many of those affected hold vocational or university degrees and perform key roles in museums, theatres, and libraries. Union leaders stressed that pay levels in culture have stagnated for over a decade.
