Portugal - Strike by railway workers - May 31, 2025

Train services across the country have reached a standstill as a national strike by railway workers enters its most disruptive days. The strike, which started on 7 May and lasted until 14 May, affected travel across the country. The strike is supported by 14 unions, making it one of the largest coordinated rail strikes in recent years. According to FECTRANS, the Federation of Transport and Communications Unions, the strike saw 100% worker participation. The walkout has been called in protest over wage conditions. Workers are demanding better salaries that reflect the rising cost of living. They are also asking for the government to respect previous agreements on pay restructuring. The unions say that recent wage increases do not restore the workers’ purchasing power lost in recent years.
