Netherlands - Pay deal for railway workers - August 31, 2025

After ten rounds of negotiations over eight months, an agreement has been reached between the unions and the national railway company NS. The agreement includes significant improvements for NS employees. Retroactively as of 1 March 2025, wages will increase by 4%. As of 1 March 2026, there will be a 3.5% increase for those in lower wage groups and a 3% increase for those in higher wage groups. A scheme based on a points system, developed by FNV Rail union, will be introduced. Employees who have worked in heavy-duty jobs for a long time can retire up to three years early. Starting in 2026, NS employees can request exemption from night shifts after their 63rd birthday, if business operations permit. NS is obliged to organize its operations to implement this as soon as possible.
