Pharmacists say the current € 230 flat-rate compensation for a 24-hour on-call shift is not enough to cover real costs, prompting ongoing discussions with the Health Ministry. Currently, the country has no law governing on-call services, and pharmacies receive a fixed allowance of € 230 for a 24-hour shift. Some pharmacies don’t even make €500 in turnover, including VAT, on a 24-hour Sunday shift, according to the Luxembourg Pharmacists’ Union (SPL). In many cases, the allowance and earnings from sales fail to cover the wages of staff covering the shift, making on-call duty a loss-making service.
