New statistics show that the number of people living in absolute poverty has grown, with nearly 170,000 people now falling below the poverty line. That places the country among the worst in the EU for poverty levels, ranking third from the bottom after Bulgaria and Latvia. According to official data, approximately 6% of the population – an increase of 60,000 people over the past year – now live in absolute poverty. The threshold is defined as monthly income below € 500 for an individual, or € 1,000 for a family of four.
