Ireland - Unions secure balanced and sustainable agreement on health services - June 30, 2025

After weeks of negotiations between the Health Service Executive (HSE), the Department of Health, and health workers’ unions, an agreement has been reached on the HSE Principles for Extended Services. The initiative aims to enhance patient access to services by extending opening hours, while ensuring staff protections are underpinned by a structured implementation plan in line with public service agreement commitments. Unions secured key protections for members as part of the agreement, which will see healthcare services operating over extended hours in a managed and sustainable way. The agreement includes provisions to protect staff welfare, ensure safe working conditions, and provide fair compensation for those participating in extended rosters.
