Taxi drivers in Athens launched a 48-hour strike on 28 May voicing their dissatisfaction with unresolved industry issues. The move follows the Government’s lack of response to multiple dialogue requests from the Attica Region Taxi Drivers' Union (SATA). The union is calling for urgent policy changes, including the reversal of a planned regulation that would require all new taxis, from 1 January 2026, to be zero-emission vehicles. The union is demanding a clear legal distinction between licensed taxi services, which are permitted to conduct point-to-point urban transport, and private hire vehicles, which it argues should be restricted to time-based rental services with drivers.
