France - Unions unite against Government budget plan - August 31, 2025

Unions CFDT, CGT, FO, CFE-CGC, CFTC, UNSA, FSU and Solidaires have joined forces in denouncing the 2026 budget unveiled by the Government. They deem it one of the harshest fiscal plans in recent memory, shifting the burden onto workers, pensioners and the most vulnerable, while sparing big business and the wealthiest. The budget includes the removal of two public holidays, cuts in public services, a new reform of unemployment insurance, a freeze on wages and social benefits, de-indexation of pensions, higher medical charges and changes to paid leave. Several actions are already taking place, with mobilisations in health, energy and the media, while some of the unions have called for a broader process of strike action. A petition launched in July has attracted close to 360,000 signatures. At the same time, a massive “Bloquons tout” (let’s block everything) citizen-led mobilisation is planned for 10 September. Born online in response to the budget, it is gaining momentum and is expected to draw widespread nationwide participation.
