France - National strike against budget proposal - October 31, 2025

Tens of thousands of protesters marched through cities on October 2, heeding the rallying cry of trade unions demanding action against plans for sharp spending cuts in next year's budget. More than 80,000 people protested across the country. Trade unions are eager to keep the pressure on the President and his new prime minister, who is racing against the parliamentary timetable to break an impasse in budget negotiations with political rivals. Union leaders, including those from the CFDT and CGT, are pushing for more spending on public services, a reversal of an increase to the retirement age and higher taxes on the wealthy.
