Finland - Court rules on standby duty dispute - August 31, 2025

The Labour Court has issued a final decision on compensation for standby time claimed by members of the Finnish Rescue Professionals Association (SPAL) in Northern Savo. The ruling confirms that standby time counted by rescue workers is to be treated as working time. The case has been ongoing for years, with an interim ruling in 2023 already clarifying that all standby time at the North Savo Rescue Department constituted working time. In December 2023, compensation for the years 2017–2019 was confirmed. The latest ruling extends this to 2020–2021, despite the City of Kuopio’s attempt to contest the claims under the new Working Hours Act.
