EU Sources - Union federation criticizes tobacco excise directive - August 31, 2025

Representing tobacco workers in Europe, the European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions (EFFAT) expresses its deep concern over the European Commission’s newly proposed recast of the Tobacco Excise Directive (TED). While EFFAT supports the EU’s public health objectives, it strongly opposes advancing tax policy without a detailed socio-economic assessment of its employment consequence for the thousands of working lives at stake. The tobacco sector has been undergoing a significant transition for many years. As a result, thousands of workers now face growing uncertainty about their future. Yet, this proposal fails to address their concerns entirely, according to EFFAT.
