The Estonian Trade Union Confederation (EAKL) wants the amendments to the Employment Contracts Act to be created honestly and with the interests of workers in mind. However, the Government sent the draft law to the Riigikogu (parliament) for the first reading without discussing the draft with the trade unions, even though it directly affects the working conditions, income and security of thousands of people. In order to protect workers' rights, the EAKL informed the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) about the situation. In recent months, the Government has made hasty decisions to amend the Employment Contracts Act. Although the Minister of Economic Affairs and Industry claimed that trade unions were involved in the drafting of the bill, EAKL has not had the opportunity to have a substantive say in the legislation.
