On 14 October, more than 140,000 people took to the streets of Brussels to protest against the wave of austerity measures that the Government wants to impose. The national strike was called by trade unions ACV-CSC, FGTB-ABVV, and CGSLB-ACLVB to denounce measures which impact pensions, social benefits, working conditions, job security, and salaries. The recently announced pension reform would raise the age of retirement to 67 by 2030. The Government has also announced socially repressive reform of unemployment benefits. Further cuts are planned for next year's budget.
