Austria - Lower pay increase for metal workers - January 31, 2025

In autumn 2023, the social partners in the metal industry agreed on a competition clause in their collective agreement, which has now become effective for almost 42,000 employees in 106 companies. Since their companies are under strong economic pressure, the collectively agreed increase for them was 0.75% or 1.5% lower than the agreed 4.8% increase in wages. Those affected will receive more free time or one-off payments as compensation. The basis for the collective agreement reduction is a formula that calculates personnel costs in relation to value added. A total of around 200,000 employees work in the metal industry. A two-year contract was negotiated for them in 2023. In the largest trade association in the metal industry, the Metal Technology Industry, 72 companies with 17,000 employees have used this competition clause, which was approved by the social partners.
