United Kingdom - Unions demand direct pay talks for healthcare workers - November 30, 2024

Three of the largest health unions, UNISON, RCN and Unite are calling for the government to abandon the National Health Service (NHS) pay review body (PRB) process in favour of direct pay negotiations. In a letter to the health secretary, the unions urge immediate discussions to secure next year’s wage increase and address critical staffing shortages. The unions argue that the current system delays pay awards, leaving NHS workers without increases due on 1 April. They warn that the lowest-paid workers could fall below the national living wage, worsening the recruitment and retention crisis already impacting patient care.
