United Kingdom - Repeal of Minimum Service Levels Act - August 31, 2024

The Government announced its intention to repeal the controversial act through the forthcoming Employment Rights Bill, signalling a return to more balanced industrial relations. The Government's commitment includes instructing public sector employers to disregard the Minimum Service Levels Act, reflecting a shift in policy towards protecting workers' rights. Additionally, the Labour Government’s broader promises to enhance workers' rights, including the abolition of zero-hour contracts and improved union recognition, will be vital in ensuring that public services and workers' rights are robustly protected in the future. The repeal is a victory for unions and their supporters who mounted a robust campaign against the legislation. This effort involved not only national resistance but also international solidarity, with trade unionists across Europe standing alongside their British counterparts.
