In December 2023, the net average wage increased by 15% year on year to RON 5,079 (€ 1,022), breaking the € 1,000 threshold for the first time. According to data published by the statistics office INS, this result was helped by the year-end bonuses. In real terms, net wages increased by 8.3% year on year. The last quarter of 2023 marked a sharp increase of real wages as headline inflation declined. Thus, the average 15.9% year on year nominal increase in the last quarter (+14.9% in the third quarter) translated into a 8.2% year on year real increase of average net earnings (RON 4,845 or € 975 per month).
