Netherlands - Unions announce public transport strike over early retirement scheme - August 31, 2024

Trade unions FNV and CNV are preparing a public transport strike on September 11 in the early morning between 4:00 and 8:00 am. This planned action is part of a series of strikes in the second week of September. Both trade unions want to make a clear statement to the Government and the employers' organization VNO-NCW. In the 2019, employers, employees and the Government agreed that a structural solution had to be found to enable workers with heavy work to retire early. However, the current scheme will be abolished as of January 1, 2025. The Government has not yet decided to extend it. With the planned actions, the unions are sending a clear message: the early retirement scheme must not be abolished.
