A new law on health and saftey at work is described as “revolutionary”. The bill aims to improve accident prevention in the workplace. To this end, it introduces heavy penalties for breaches of workplace safety rules. The new law provides for a fine of between € 1,500 and € 50,000 and, in serious cases, up to two years’ imprisonment. In the event of a repeat offence, this can be increased to four years’ imprisonment. Administrative fines are increased from less than € 500 to € 20,000. The bill also increases the number of staff within the Occupational Health and Safety Authority to 70 by the end of 2024 and 80 by the end of 2025.
