The employees of steel manufacturer Liberty Steel are finally going to receive their wages for August, but concerns over future payments remain among staff and trade unions. After missing a first deadline of 15 September, Liberty Steel was told to pay the wages by 19 September, a deadline it was able to meet, unions confirmed. Operations at Liberty Steel have been at a standstill since May 2023, when workplace inspectors determined the facilities endangered the safety and health of the company’s staff. Despite halting operations, the firm continues to pay its staff. It initially blamed the late payments of August wages on technical difficulties.
