Iceland - Conflict over teachers’ salaries - October 31, 2024

Negotiations between the Icelandic Teachers’ Union (KI) and the Association of Local Authorities (SIS) remain unresolved, with strikes likely to take place. The head of the Association of Local Authorities’ Negotiating Committee, expressed little optimism for an agreement, citing large gaps between the parties, particularly over salary demands. The Icelandic Teachers’ Union was acquitted by the Labour Court of charges related to the legality of their strike announcement. The parties held a meeting after the ruling but no agreement was reached. Teachers are demanding monthly salaries of over one million ISK (€ 6,700), in line with the average wages of public sector specialists.
