Greece - Strikes over cost of living and public health cuts - October 31, 2024

Healthcare workers across the country participated in a nationwide strike organized by ADEDY, the Federation of Hospital Doctors and the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers (POEDIN). These unions are pressing for wage increases, the mass recruitment of permanent healthcare staff, and substantial public investment to improve the health system, which they argue has been underfunded for too long. This strike is not only a response to the rising cost of living but also to the severe staff shortages and growing concerns about the privatization of public healthcare. Among the unions' key demands are the hiring of permanent workers, salary hikes, the regularization of contract workers, the inclusion of healthcare workers in the BAE (occupational hazards classification), and a firm stance against privatizing the public health system, which they believe will further harm both workers and patients.
