Germany - Shorter working hours in social sector - September 30, 2024

The employers' association for the social sector Paritätische Tarifgemeinschaft e.V., together with the trade unions ver.di and GEW, has agreed on a uniform collective agreement for the state of Berlin. The new collective agreement is to come into force on 1 January 2025, and initially applies to the approximately 4,000 employees of social providers. The collective agreement includes, among other things, a reduction in weekly working hours from the current 40 hours to 39 hours from 1 January 2025, and 38.5 hours from 1 January 2027. Employees will receive time off on 24 and 31 December, as far as operationally possible. There are 30 days of regular annual leave and up to 6 additional days of leave for shift, rotating shift or night work. Union members receive an additional € 350 per year.
