Germany - Minimalist transposition of EU Minimum Wage Directive - October 31, 2024

The EU member states are required to transpose the European Minimum Wage Directive into national law by 15 November 2024. On 23 October, the German government has now officially announced in the Federal Law Gazette that the requirements of the Directive are already fulfilled by existing laws such as the Minimum Wage Act or the Collective Bargaining Act and that, therefore, in its view, there is no need for further legal action to transpose the Directive into national law. According to some observers, this is a missed opportunity to ensure an adequate minimum wage in Germany.
