A law change affecting the work requirement for unemployment benefits comes into effect from 2 September. According to the social security agency Kela, the reform will make it more difficult for unemployed people to qualify for earnings-related daily allowance or the basic unemployment allowance. The work requirement refers to the amount of time that an unemployed person worked before becoming unemployed, and the benefits they are entitled to based on that period of work. The work must also meet certain other criteria in order to count towards the requirement. The changes will see the work requirement extended from 6 months to 12 months.
