Bulgaria - Unions defend higher minimum wage - November 30, 2024

The trade unions from KNSB and KT Podkrepja defended the new minimum wage of 1.077 BGN (€ 551), which will apply next year. KT Podkrepa even came out with an official position on the challenge in the Supreme Administrative Court of the decree of the Council of Ministers for determining the lowest compensation. The employers argue that the formula is overly simplistic, failing to account for broader economic conditions like productivity and labour market competitiveness. They also claim that the decree violates the EU directive and ILO Convention No. 131, which require a balanced approach considering both economic factors and workers’ needs. The union believes that the appeal of the Industrial Capital Association to the court is unfounded. In the letter to the prime minister and the ministers of finance and social policy, signed by the leader of Podkrepa, the reasons of the employers' organization for requesting the cancellation of the decree are challenged.
