The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) insists that a national subsistence wage be introduced, with the minimum wage in the country reaching at least 80% of the subsistence wage by 2027. According to the International Labour Organization, the subsistence wage is the wage level required to ensure a decent standard of living for workers and their families. The trade union proposes that calculations be made using a special consumer basket of 479 goods and services, excluding alcohol and cigarettes. According to the latest data, the subsistence gross wage is 1,874 BGN (€ 958) per month. For 2024, the country's minimum wage of 933 BGN (€ 477) is just under 50% of the subsistence wage.
