Spain - Government announces working week of 37.5 hours - November 30, 2023

The new labour minister announced four major projects, including a minimum wage increase and reducing the working week from 40 to 37.5 hours by 2025. The reduction in working hours will not affect workers’ pay. It is estimated that the new schedule will benefit more than 12 million people in the private sector who still have to work 40 hours a week. 16.7% of private employees already enjoy 37.5 working hours or less per week. The proposal would be carried out progressively. In 2024, a maximum working week of 38.5 hours will be proposed, and in 2025 it would be consolidated at 37.5 hours per week. Those affected will have a cut of 150 hours per year, going from the current 1,950 to the 1,800 per year.
