Germany - Strikes in public sector - November 30, 2023

After two fruitless rounds of negotiations for the 2.5 million public sector employees in the Länder, more and more employees are taking to the streets. On 22 November, in Berlin around 10,000 people followed the warning strike call from unions ver.di, GEW, GdP and IG BAU, almost paralyzing the capital's public services. Senate administrations and district offices, daycare centers, schools and universities, the police departments, the fire brigade and the forestry companies of the state of Berlin were on strike. Employees in other Länder also took part in strike actions. In Saxony, 1,500 teachers, school assistants and educational specialists took part in the work stoppages. Around 2,000 people took part in warning strikes at universities across the country. 200 forestry employees from the IG BAU called for a warning strike on 21 November in Hanover. A total of three rounds of negotiations are planned for the collective bargaining round in the public service of the Länder. The start of the negotiations took place on 26 October.  the 2nd round on November 2nd and the 3rd and presumably final round is planned for December 7th to 9th, 2023.
