Germany - Strike in retail - November 30, 2023

Under the motto “Friday is not a working day - Friday is a strike day,” union ver.di called on retail employees to go on a nationwide strike on 10 November 2023. This is the third time this fall that tens of thousands of retail employees have taken to the streets nationwide to fight for a collective agreement. In North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, 1,300 strikers from around 100 companies took part in the work stoppages. At the beginning of the week the employers in the retail sector and their umbrella organization HDE decided in a concerted action to cancel collective bargaining negotiations that had already been scheduled. A week earlier, the HDE presented a new offer, which, according to the union, continues to mean real wage losses for employees.
