The survey supports affiliates in their call for equal pay. It can also be used by journalists to compare their own wage with those in similar positions.
While journalism is a tough and courageous profession, it is not always an equal profession. The global gender pay gap is estimated at 23%. It means that women earn on average 77% of what men earn. Journalism is no exception.
Obstacles to equal pay include:
- Lack of access to higher paid positions
- Lack of shared parenting responsibility
- Lack of pay transparency
- Not enough collective agreement provisions on:
- Reducing pay inequalities between women and men
- Balancing work and family life
The WageIndicator/IFJ Salary Survey on journalism is aimed at documenting the wage gap so as to reduce it.
"This survey is going to help our affiliates fight for equal pay and opportunities," says IFJ President Younes Mjahed.
"With this survey we will map how big the gender pay gap is in journalism, and work to make it smaller together," says WageIndicator Foundation Director Paulien Osse.
