Overview of the team
The Gig Economy at WageIndicator plays a pivotal role in studying the evolving dynamics of the global gig economy. Interns in this team conduct in-depth research on worker actions, legislative developments, relevant laws, court cases, and union activities within the gig economy. This data is meticulously organized into a comprehensive database that provides insights and drives visual content creation.
The team’s work not only contributes to the database but also supports other teams such as Content, and Data Analytics & Visualization. Interns are involved in updating WageIndicator’s websites and newsletters, creating social media content using Canva, and generating insights for WageIndicator’s platform economy-focused website, Gigpedia.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collect and manage data on major gig platforms worldwide to build a global database.
- Use online research tools (e.g., Google Alerts, Google News) to gather news, insights, and trends.
- Collect case studies and examples of positive gig work models.
- Review literature and legislation related to the gig economy.
- Assist with presenting quantitative material through visuals.
- Create social media content and commentary based on collected data.
- Provide insights and synthesis of findings to support WageIndicator’s projects.
Core Skills:
- Proficiency in Excel and Word for data management and organization.
- Passion for news, events, and global worker stories, with the ability to curate and present them effectively.
- Willingness to follow structured work plans and collaborate on team goals.
- Excellent attention to detail and critical thinking to present objective insights on the platform economy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build a collaborative working relationship.
- Familiarity with Canva is a plus.
- Fluency in languages beyond English is advantageous for accessing diverse information sources.

All interns, regardless of their primary team, are integral members of the Market Research team. This dynamic group is dedicated to exploring cost-of-living data across different countries, helping WageIndicator analyze how global events—like the COVID-19 pandemic—have reshaped economies and daily life.
Interns play a key role in collecting and analyzing data that informs quarterly living wage calculations. These insights directly influence WageIndicator’s understanding of affordability and economic trends in various regions. By exploring online markets, navigating local language websites, and uncovering real-time pricing trends, the Market Research team ensures accurate and relevant data collection.
