About the Session

Though the gig economy offers workers flexibility, it often fails to provide them wages that cover their cost of living, or 'Living Wages'. Furthermore, gig workers are rarely covered by Minimum Wage regulations, jeopardising work security. To solve this, WageIndicator has created a Living-Tariff-Tool to help these workers calculate what they should earn keeping in mind living costs and work needs.

In this session, WageIndicator will introduce and demonstrate the Living Tariff tool, and also highlight strategies and advocacy efforts from Indonesia that aim to achieve a Living Wage for freelancers here. We will explore how how securing Living Wages can provide much-needed security. Additionally, we'll examine how platform companies can take greater responsibility for the well-being of their gig workforce, with insights from Kenya’s market’s unique challenges.

The session will conclude with a brainstorm on the ongoing challenges faced by gig-workers in achieving a Living Tariff. We will explore strategies for improving their workings conditions, and potential wider Living Tariff Tool adoption. We will discuss how to leverage data and collective insights for policy changes that support the well-being and financial security of gig-workers.
