Who are platform economy workers?

Platform workers are generally young workers. Moreover, the nature of work, especially in crowdwork, allows those marginalised segments to participate who would normally be excluded from labour market on account of disability or care responsibilities. It includes female workers and rural workers as well. Governments, especially in developing economies, see gig economy as a source of good jobs for millions of young workers entering the labour market every year. Platform economy gives workers flexibility as well in choosing their time and location of work and the kind of work they want to perform.

Gig economy makes looking for work easier and it is creating new kinds of jobs. The driving, cleaning and delivery work were never paid this well as these are now with the advent Uber, Upwork and Deliveroo. It has worked as an “upgrade” for the low skilled workers.1
