In 2023 there were 52 strikes, the largest number in more than 50 years. In 1972, work was stopped even more often: 58 times. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), a total of 142,000 working days were lost in 2023. Since the first Covid year 2020, with 9 strikes, the number of work stoppages has increased significantly every year. More than 17,000 employees were involved in these strikes, approximately a thousand more than in 2022. This is considerably less than in 2021 (28,000) and 2020 (105,000).
