Iceland - Strike in municipalities - June 30, 2023

A meeting between the trade union BSRB and the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities ended without a result. With no agreement in place, broad strike action by BSRB started on 5 June in 29 municipalities. A total of 2,500 people were involved in the strikes. The strikes included personnel in kindergartens, swimming pools, sports facilities, service centres, municipal offices, offices, maintenance buildings and harbours. According to BSRB, “The strikes are not taken lightly but to enforce demands against the local authorities of the country who refuse to correct wage inequalities.”
