Norway - Union demands fair real wage increase for all working people - January 31, 2024

Since 2024 is an even year, a main settlement will be negotiated. This means that everything in the collective agreement, not just wages, is up for negotiation. The negotiations have been postponed until mid-April. The negotiations are carried out either in concert – where unions LO and NHO negotiate centrally – or confederally, where LO’s confederation negotiates with its employer counterpart in the private or public sector. It is LO’s representative board that decides whether the settlement should be coordinated or federal. The interim settlement is often carried out collectively, and the main settlement federally. In 2023, the interim settlement ended in a strike. It was necessary to ensure increased purchasing power for all groups. With high price growth and inflation, it has been difficult to get a real wage increase. For this year, the union thinks it is possible to achieve real wage growth.
