Iceland - Women on 24-hour strike - October 31, 2023

Women went on a 24-hour strike over gender inequality, including the prime minister, who said the fight for equal treatment was moving far too slowly at home and abroad. Schools and libraries were either closed or operated on limited hours as female staff stayed home. Hospitals said they would only handle emergency cases. The public sector federation together with different other organisations were supporting the action to address gender inequality, the gender pay gap and to tackle gender-based and sexual violence. Actions ranged from strikes and demonstrations to the withdrawal of all forms of labour, paid and unpaid.
