Germany - Warning strikes in steel industry - November 30, 2023

In the night from 30 November to 1 December, employees in the iron and steel industry started the hot phase of the collective bargaining round with warning strikes. IG Metall is demanding a 8.5% wage increase for employees in the iron and steel industry in north-western and eastern Germany over a period of 12 months, as well as a 32-hour working week without wage losses. In addition, the collective agreements on partial retirement, the use of service contracts and job security are to be extended. In the first round of negotiations, the employers had offered a pay increase of 3.1 percent for 15 months. Far too little, from the union's point of view. The warning strikes are therefore intended to increase the pressure on the employers to improve their wage offer.
