BARWAGE Final Conference - Redistributing The Wage Cake? 

Between 2021 and 2024, the BARWAGE consortium including Utrecht University, WageIndicator Foundation, the Central European Labour Studies Institute, and Fondazione Giuseppe di Vittorio have been studying the importance of collective bargaining for wage setting in the European Union.

With the project coming to a close soon, the team presented its findings and discuss the subject of wage-setting and collective agreements with experts from academia, civil society, and industry. Some of the questions they addressed were: Does a rising minimum wage lift all wages? And what role can collective bargaining play to negotiate wage increases higher up the wage distribution?

Janna Besamusca

Janna is an assistant professor of Interdisciplinary Social Science at Utrecht University, and one of WageIndicator's lead researchers related to Collective Agreements, such as BARWAGE. She is also a member of the Supervisory Board of WageIndicator Foundation.  She obtained her PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 2019 for her research into the position of mothers in the labour market in middle- and high-income countries.

Rositsa Makelova is Scientific Secretary at the Institute for Social and Trade Union Research and Training (ISTURET), Bulgaria. She has an expertise in the cost of living, sector-level analysis and industrial relations.

Petru Sorin Dandea is the general secretary of the National Trade Union Confederation Cartel ALFA in Romania and has been a member of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) since 2007.

Martin Guzi

Martin Guzi is an Assistant Professor at Masaryk University, a Research Associate with Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI) and one of the Lead Researchers at WageIndicator Foundation on Living Wages. Martin holds MSc in Mathematics from Comenius University (Slovakia) and PhD in Economics from CERGE-EI (Czechia). His main research interests are immigration and integration policy, income inequality and income adequacy (living wages), subjective well-being, and the careers of university graduates. Adam Šumichrast

Adam.png

Adam Šumichrast is a researcher at the Central European Labour Studies Institute. He focuses on industrial relations and labor history. In 2024, he defended his PhD in history at Masaryk University in Brno. Access Adam's presentation here.
