October 2021 - United States - Black and Latinamerican provide a large share of digital labor platform work in the US

Black and Latinamerican workers provide a disproportionate share of digital labor platform work in the United States. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that Black and Latinx workers make up almost 42 percent of workers for Uber, Lyft, and other “electronically mediated work” companies, although they comprise less than 29 percent of the overall U.S. workforce.

In New York City, 9 out of 10 (86%) app-based ride-hail drivers are immigrants, with half coming from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

In Los Angeles County, 23 percent of drivers for Uber and Lyft are Black, compared to only 8 percent of the general population.

In San Francisco, nearly 80 percent of app-based ride-hail and delivery workers are people of color, and a majority are immigrants
