United Kingdom - Civil service union plans campaign on pay and jobs - March 31, 2024

Trade union PCS is set to launch a ballot for industrial action as a first step in a renewed campaign around pay, jobs and working conditions. The union has around 150,000 members in over 200 bargaining units across the civil service and has been successful in recent years in securing support for targeted strike action despite the strict ballot rules covering public services. The union’s key demands include: a cost-of-living rise, with an inflation-proofed increase plus pay restoration; pay equality across departments; a living wage of £ 15 (€ 17.50) per hour; a minimum of 35 days’ annual leave; and a significant shortening of the working week with no loss of pay.
