Belgium - Blockade of distribution center - January 31, 2024

The largest distribution center of supermarket chain Lidl in Belgium was blocked for a day due to an action by the FGTB union. The union demanded the reappointment of a dismissed employee. Work has been at a standstill due to strike action, after a staff representative was dismissed with immediate effect for ‘insubordination’. The employee sat on the works council and was also a candidate in the upcoming social elections. The union is demanding that the employee be reinstated immediately and filed an indefinite strike notice. In the afternoon a bailiff came to break up the strike: the FGTB gave in to the blockade due to the demand of € 1,000 per participating union member.
