Netherlands - First strike ever at bank - March 31, 2023

ING Bank did not respond to an ultimatum by trade unions FNV Finance, CNV Vakmensen and De Unie. As a consequence, the unions announced a work stoppage on 14 March from 10 AM to 12 PM. It is the first time in the history of the bank, the largest in the country, that employees are on strike. And it is for the first time since the 1980s that bank employees in the Netherlands have stopped working. In their ultimatum, the three unions demanded that the bank compensate for inflation for the 14,000 ING employees. There was no response to that demand, so that the final offer of 3% as of 1 October 2023 and 4% as of 1 January 2024 remains in place. This means a loss of purchasing power of about 15%.
