EU Sources - Increasing pressure on health and care workers - September 30, 2023

In a report published on 14 September 2023, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warns of a ‘ticking timebomb’ regarding health and care workers in Europe. Many general practitioners across Europe are being forced to take on more and more patients from colleagues who have retired or quit the profession. Meanwhile, these clinicians are not been replaced. Each EU member state has its own specific requirements for training future doctors, as well as fixed salaries. However, health personnel remain unhappy about their salaries and working conditions. This includes doctors; both specialists and general practitioners. The WHO report warns that these workforce problems in the healthcare sector could get even worse if no immediate action is taken.
